The excitement surrounding this year's SOO Opera season is truly palpable, and it's all thanks to the remarkable lineup of talent and productions. Returning for a second season, Hyun Kim will be taking the conductor's baton for Gianni Schicchi, while Richard Milton Barrett will be expertly guiding Tosca. As the "Water Winter Wonderland," Michigan proudly embraces the motto of "Pure Michigan," a sentiment that resonates deeply.

During this past summer, I had the immense pleasure of discovering pure joy in the serene Northeast corner of the state, where the majestic Lake Huron converges with the grandeur of Lake Superior. It's a place that seamlessly blends the charms of the local scene with a touch of international flair, bringing together Metropolitan Opera virtuosos and talented University voice students. In an astonishing display of artistry, two top-tier opera productions were meticulously crafted within a mere three weeks.

At the heart of this achievement lies the Soo Opera Young Artist program, a platform that carefully selects the crème de la crème from the country's pool of talented singers. My experience here evoked fond memories of my childhood visits to the Santa Fe Opera and my subsequent two-year apprenticeship there. Amidst the enchanting setting of Sault St. Marie, I couldn't help but sense the birth of something truly remarkable. It was an honor to collaborate with these budding artists, offering lessons and master classes on the nuances of German Lied and opera arias.

Among the rising stars, a few truly stood out. Karen Beacom's portrayal of Tosca was nothing short of captivating, and Paige Chapman's rendition of Lauretta left an indelible mark. Additionally, the performances by Chauncey Packer as Cavaradossi and Juan Garcia as Gianni Schicchi were simply extraordinary. At SOO Opera, a harmonious blend of seasoned artists and young professionals is cultivated, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and reverence for the vocal arts. Each day is a testament to their unyielding pursuit of perfection.

The young artists embarking on this journey gain invaluable insights into the importance of preparation and unwavering dedication to the world of opera and song. Their determination and passion to carve a niche for themselves within the realm of classical singing and opera theater are nothing short of inspiring.
